   Colorless transparent liquid, density 1.635kg/L ,boiling point 125,refractive index 1.635(25).It can not dissolve in water ,but can dissolve in some organic solvents, such as methylbenzene, carbon tetrachloride ,carbon disulfide ,trichloromethane and others. It deconposes slowly in water, and decomposes rapidly in alkali solution.

Method Summary
Portions of the PSCl3 are injected in neat form into the gas
chromatograph and an area percent report is produced. A thermal
conductivity detector and a split/splitless capillary inlet are used.

a) Thiophosphoryl chloride (PSCl3).
Required Equipment
a) Gas Chromatograph. Hewlett Packard 5890 or equivalent, equipped with
a thermal conductivity detector (TCD), a split/splitless inlet with a
cup splitter glass liner packed with glass wool, and a model 7673 or
equivalent automatic sampler.
b) Data Acquisition and Analysis Device. VAX MULTICHROM or equivalent
chromatography data collection and processing system.A stand alone
integrator may also be used.
c) Gas Chromatographic Column. 0.53mm diameter X 30 meter length, 5.0m
film thickness DB-1 or equivalent capillary column (J&W catalog number 125-1035).
d) Syringe. 10l automatic sampler syringe (Hewlett Packard catalog
number 5181-1267 or equivalent).
e) Crimp Top Vials. Hewlett Packard 2-ml glass crimp top vials with
Teflon lined silicon septa (Hewlett Packard catalog number 5061-3350 or equivalent).
f) Disposable Pasteur Pipets.Glass,disposable pipets,(Fisher Scientific catalog number 13-678-20A or equivalent).
Instrument Conditions
Required Chemicals
a) Thiophosphoryl chloride,98%, Aldrich Chemical Company, catalog
number 22,429-4.
b) Acetone, reagent grade.
Required Standard Reference Materials
Inject 2l of the reference PSCl3 and create a calibration file with the peak names and retention time windows as in the attached chromatogram.
Detailed Procedure
The samples are analyzed in neat form according the GC method below:
GC Conditions:
a) Carrier Gas: Helium @ 5.0ml/minute at 35C
b) Detector: Thermal Conductivity Detector, low sensitivity, range 0
c) Detector Temperature: 260C
d) Detector Make-Up Flow:1.5 ml/minute
e) Reference Gas Flow:20ml/minute(total of column,make-up and reference)
f) Injection Mode: Split, with split flow approximately 30ml/minute.
?? Use an automatic sampler if possible.
g) Inlet Temperature:250C
h) Oven Temperature Program:
Initial Temperature: 35C
Initial Time 10 minutes
Program Rate: 15C/minute
Final Temperature: 250C
Final Time:10 minutes (NOTE:The run may be stopped at 24 minutes if it is certain that no other components are in the sample.)
Injection Size:2l(NOTE:After the sampler has injected the sample, remove the syringe and clean it thoroughly with water and then with acetone.
Failure to do this will result in the plunger freezing in the barrel of the syringe.)
